Overview
Agricultural biodiversity, also called agrobiodiversity, is the variety and variability of plants, animals, and micro-organisms that are used directly or indirectly for food and agriculture. It encompasses the diversity of cultivated crops and their wild relatives, livestock breeds, pollinators, soil organisms, and the wider ecosystems within which farming takes place. This diversity underpins food security and resilience by providing genetic resources for breeding, supporting ecosystem services such as soil fertility, pollination, and natural pest control, and buffering production systems against pests, disease, and climate variability. Conserving and sustainably using agricultural biodiversity is a central concern of sustainable farming and is increasingly relevant to Precision Agriculture, which uses data, sensing, and site-specific management to optimise inputs while maintaining environmental health. By aligning targeted management with the maintenance of diverse and functional agroecosystems, precision approaches can support both productivity and conservation. Within the scope of Precision Agriculture, which addresses efficient, technology-enabled, and sustainable crop and land management, agricultural biodiversity is a key foundation for long-term productivity.
