For Reviewers

Practical guidance for confidential, constructive and evidence-based review of research in dentistry, oral medicine and implantology.

Reviewer recommendations inform the editorial process. Final editorial decisions remain the responsibility of the journal's editors.

Review essentials

Expertise
Accept invitations only when the subject and methods are within your competence.
Confidentiality
Treat manuscripts, data and review discussions as confidential.
Independence
Disclose competing interests and decline when impartial assessment may be affected.
Editorial responsibility
Recommendations are advisory; editors make the final decision.

Before accepting an invitation

Accept an invitation only when you can provide an independent, careful review of the submitted work.

Subject and methods
Confirm that the manuscript topic, research design and methods are within your relevant clinical, research or methodological expertise.
Availability
Accept only when you have sufficient time to complete the assessment within the timeline agreed with the editorial office.
Competing interests
Disclose financial, professional, institutional, academic or personal interests that could affect, or appear to affect, an independent assessment.
Confidentiality and contact
Keep the invitation and manuscript material confidential. Accept or decline promptly, and contact the editor if you need clarification before proceeding.

Assess the manuscript

Focus comments on whether the research is clearly reported, methodologically sound and relevant to dentistry, oral medicine or implantology.

Research question and relevance
Consider clarity and significance, fit with dental, oral-medicine or implantology research, originality, and clinical or scholarly relevance.
Study design and methods
Assess design appropriateness, participant selection, controls, randomisation or blinding where relevant, laboratory and biomaterials methods, and reproducibility.
Data and analysis
Check sample-size rationale, statistical methods, missing data, consistency between text, tables and figures, and whether conclusions follow from the evidence.
Clinical, imaging and biomaterials considerations
Review clinical protocols, diagnostic and imaging methods, image quality and calibration, implant or restorative-material descriptions, outcome measures, adverse events, limitations and generalisability.
Ethics and reporting
Check ethics approval, informed consent, clinical-image permissions, trial registration where applicable, funding and conflict disclosures, and relevant reporting standards.

Write useful feedback

A clear review helps editors understand the evidence and helps authors address substantive issues.

Structured review format

  • Begin with a concise summary of the manuscript's contribution and its main strengths.
  • Separate major issues from minor comments, and identify what is essential for a reasoned editorial assessment.
  • Clearly separate comments intended for the authors from confidential comments intended only for the editor.
  • Make comments specific and actionable, explaining the evidence behind methodological, reporting or interpretation concerns.
  • Comment on figures, tables and imaging evidence where clarity, quality or consistency affects interpretation.
  • Use constructive, respectful language. Focus criticism on the work, not the authors, and do not rewrite the manuscript for them.
  • Where requested, explain the reasoning behind your recommendation and distinguish limitations from optional improvements.

Confidentiality, conflicts and concerns

Manuscript material and review discussions are confidential and must not be shared, reused or used for personal, research or commercial advantage.

Do not upload manuscripts, reviewer reports, figures, data or editorial correspondence to generative-AI tools or other external systems unless the journal has expressly approved their use and appropriate confidentiality protections are in place.

Raise concerns privately with the editor

Disclose competing interests promptly. Report concerns about possible misconduct, duplicated images, unclear consent, fabricated or inconsistent data, inappropriate citations or privacy issues privately to the editor. Do not make accusations directly to authors.

Do not request unnecessary citations or citations primarily intended to promote your own work, a particular journal or a professional network. Any suggested citation should be directly relevant to strengthening the manuscript.
